We cover a lot of Boker stuff here, most of it from the highly prolific company’s range Boker Plus line – but Boker also has an entry-level label called Magnum, which gets its own slew of releases alongside its bigger brother. Case in point, the brand new Empery.

From start to finish, “elegance” seems to have been the watchword with the Empery. This is an in-house effort, and the Magnum design team started with one of the most innately handsome of blade shapes, the drop point, embellished it here with a very long harpoon swedge that, perhaps due to that length, does not come across as tactical or aggressive (at least to our eye). The flipper opening method is being served two ways here, with a spine-side tab in addition to a frontal one.

There are two flippers on the Empery

The Empery’s blade is made from 440B, an older, entry-level stainless that may very well see the most play in enthusiast-grade cutlery within the Boker Magnum lineup. 440B won’t knock off anybody’s socks in terms of performance, but it can certainly take an edge, and take it quite quickly in comparison to the more elaborate, modern formulations. It is also a highly corrosion resistant steel, and here, with a black blade coating on top, rust should be a distant worry if it’s present at all.

The Empery’s handle is slim, gentlemanly, and classy. A liner lock, its scales are made from white G-10 with a sort of frag pattern cut into them – and again, as with the swedge, the frag pattern’s implementation somehow evades an overt tactical vibe, and instead imparts a sort of refined elegance to the piece. There’s a reversible deep carry pocket clip too. In total this one manages to sneak in under the 3 ounce mark at 2.93 oz.

The Empery is available now.
